After a thrilling race in Miami, F1 once again arrives in the Emilia Romagna region in Italy for the 2024 F1 Imola GP.

In 2023, the Emilia Romagna area was heavily flooded due to torrential rain. The event managers were not only forced to cancel the race but many lives around the area were affected as well.

As the 2024 F1 season progresses, many teams are now bringing massive upgrade packages for their cars in order to gain an advantage over their rivals.

2024 F1 Imola GP: List of upgrades

Red Bull

  • Front Wing (Performance)
  • Floor Edge (Performance)
  • Rear Corner (Circuit Specific)
  • Floor Body (Performance)
  • Nose (Performance)

Miami GP was the second race in 2024 so far that Red Bull did not win. McLaren's Lando Norris outright beat defending world champion Max Verstappen to clinch his first F1 race win.

Coming into Imola, the Austrian team has brought a new front wing, floor edge, rear corner, floor body, and nose. Most of these changes were to adjust the load and airflow around the car.

Ferrari

  • Front Wing (Performance)
  • Rear Wing (Performance)
  • Sidepod Inlet (Performance)
  • Coke/Engine Cover (Performance)
  • Floor Edge (Performance)
  • Diffuser (Performance)
  • Rear Suspension (Performance)

Ahead of the Imola GP, Ferrari conducted two filming days on the Fiorano track where they tested their new upgrade package. The Italian team brought the most extensive package to the first Italian race of the 2024 F1 season.

Ferrari brought front and rear wing, sidepod inlet, coke/engine cover, floor edge, diffuser, and rear suspension. The new sidepod inlet was the hottest topic in the paddock since it somewhat resembles Red Bull RB20's 'overbite' inlet.

Apart from that, most parts were brought to tweak the airflow, reduce drag, and modify the loads around the car. This was Ferrari's first sizable package of 2024.

Mercedes

  • Floor Fences (Performance)
  • Floor Body (Performance)
  • Rear Wing (Circuit Specific)
  • Beam Wing (Circuit Specific)
  • Front Corner (Circuit Specific)

Mercedes continues to struggle in the 2024 F1 season after six races. Lewis Hamilton finished P6 while George Russell secured P8 in the Miami GP. Silver Arrows brought four new parts for the Imola GP: floor fences, floor body, rear wing, and beam wing. While some of these upgrades improve the airflow quality around the floor, others are aimed at reducing drag and adjusting local loads.

McLaren

  • Rear Wing (Circuit Specific)
  • Beam Wing (Circuit Specific)

McLaren brought a major upgrade package at the Miami GP, which successfully unlocked a lot of potential on the MCL38. It allowed Lando Norris to win his first-ever F1 race.

Hence, the British team arrives for the Imola GP with a small list of changes. They only brought a new rear and beam wing which were specific for the track. These parts mainly aim to increase downforce and efficiency.

Alpine

  • Floor Edge (Performance)

Alpine is gradually moving up the grid in the 2024 F1 season. They started the season as a backmarker team since they were trying out a brand-new car concept. However, they soon picked up pace and started finishing in the points.

Coming into Imola, they only brought a new floor edge to reduce floor deflection at high speeds and improve the airflow around the rear tires.

Aston Martin

  • Front Wing (Performance)
  • Nose (Performance)
  • Floor Body (Performance)
  • Floor Fences (Performance)
  • Floor Edge (Performance)
  • Diffuser (Performance)
  • Coke/Engine Cover (Performance)
  • Rear Suspension (Performance)
  • Rear Corner (Performance)

Aston Martin is another team that brought a massive upgrade package to the Imola GP. The team is struggling to replicate their 2023 season-opening performance in 2024. Fernando Alonso is currently down in eighth place with only 33 points, while Lance Stroll is 11th with nine points.

Almost all parts that the team brought to Imola were to adjust local loads and airflow all around the car.

Williams

  • Floor Body (Reliability)

Ever since Alex Albon's crash in Australia, and Logan Sargeant's shunt in Japan, Williams has been struggling over not having a spare chassis for their drivers. In Miami GP, they managed to bring a spare chassis, which can now be used if one of their drivers crashes again.

Coming into Imola GP, they only brought a new floor body that is lighter than the last one.

Kick Sauber

  • Floor Fences (Performance)

Sauber has been having one of the worst starts of an F1 season. They are last in the constructors' championship and neither Valtteri Bottas nor Zhou Guanyu have scored any points up until now.

For Imola, the team only brought new floor fences that improved the aerodynamics of their car.

Haas

  • Front Wing Endplate (Performance)
  • Rear Suspension (Performance)
  • Rear Corner (Performance)

Haas is currently seventh in the constructors' championship with seven points. Nico Hulkenberg is 13th in the drivers' championship with six points, while Kevin Magnussen is 16th with one point.

For Imola, the American team brought the front wing endplate, rear suspension, and rear corners. These upgrades improve the flow around the front tires, brake drums, and the rear of the car.

The 2024 F1 Imola GP commenced on Friday, May 17, with the first and second practice sessions. On Saturday, May 18, the third and final practice session will take place, followed by the qualifying session for the main Grand Prix. On Sunday, May 19, the Imola GP will be held.
