In an interview a few months ago, Red Bull aero wizard Adrian Newey talked about why he never joined Ferrari.

On Thursday, April 25, several reports from reputed sources emerged claiming that Newey wanted to leave Red Bull.

Even though these reports stated that Newey has not officially announced his desire to leave the team, the rumors flared up and engulfed the F1 space. It also sparked debates on which team could poach the talented car designer.

Ferrari was discussed as one of the top candidates that could lure Newey, especially with their glittering 2025 driver lineup: Lewis Hamilton and Charles Leclerc.

Back in September 2023, however, Adrian Newey explained why he never joined the Italian F1 giants. Speaking on the Beyond the Grid podcast, he recalled how one of the reasons why his first marriage failed was because he was working in IndyCar in America and his wife did not like the lifestyle of the country.

Since he knew Ferrari would want him in Maranello to work on their F1 cars, he decided not to join the Italian team to protect his second marriage.

"The main reason I didn’t [join Ferrari] is my first marriage failed, for various reasons, but probably predominantly because I went off to IndyCar, so I was living in the States during the season," Newley said.

He added:

"My relatively newlywed wife came out with me to start with, really didn’t like living in America and went back and that put a strain on our marriage that we never really recovered from, to be perfectly honest. So ’93, I was one year into my second marriage. I didn’t want to make that same mistake again."

Red Bull senior's thoughts on Adrian Newey's potential move to Ferrari

Red Bull senior advisor Helmut Marko has said that he hoped Adrian Newey would not leave the Austrian team to join Ferrari.

When Christian Horner was accused and investigated for inappropriate behavior towards a female employee in February, Red Bull were surrounded by loads of controversies and rumors. Several reports claimed that a few senior members, including Adrian Newey, were set to leave the team.

Motorsport-Total.com asked Marko about Newey's potential exit in March, to which the Austrian said:

“Newey in Ferrari? I hope not as continuing to be constantly committed to improving and continuing our path of success should guarantee a sufficiently reassuring environment”.

As of now, there has been no official confirmation from the team or Newey about the latter's departure.
