Manchester United's summer signing Rasmus Hojlund has jumped to the defense of his colleague Bruno Fernandes amid the criticisms the Portuguese has faced this season. The striker stated that it's unfair to see the Red Devils captain get so much stick because he's doing everything well.
Fernandes has received plaudits over the last few weeks for producing top-level performances and carrying Manchester United on his back with his decisive efforts. However, that wasn't the case some months ago.
The midfielder was constantly being called out by critics and it wasn't always all about his performances. At times, they scrutinized his body language, other times, they pointed to his leadership skills. However, all of that has quickly changed now and he's now the sole bright spot in the team.
Bruno Fernandes stole the spotlight this week by scoring twice and setting up another to drag Manchester United from behind and inspire them to a 4-2 victory over Sheffield United in the Premier League.
Following that performance, Rasmus Hojlund has showered praise on the attacking midfielder, seizing the opportunity to snap back at critics.
“I was very happy for him because he’s also getting a lot of criticism, and it’s not fair because he’s doing everything top-level all the time,” the striker told Football Focus (via TBR Football).
“He’s an amazing captain. He’s been very good recently and also in the last many, many games. But again, a player who gets a lot of criticism, which is not needed,” he added.
Bruno Fernandes has now bagged seven goals and two assists for Manchester United in his last five outings. Across all competitions so far this season, the attacking midfielder has a record of 11 goals and 15 assists to his name.
What's next for Manchester United?
The Red Devils will continue their push for a top-four finish in the Premier League when they return to action in the English top flight this weekend. They're scheduled to face Burnley at Old Trafford today (Saturday, April 27).
Following that, they'll face Crystal Palace away from home on Monday, May 6, before locking horns with Arsenal, Newcastle United, and Brighton in their last three league games of the season.
Erik ten Hag's men will then conclude their campaign with the FA Cup final against Manchester City at Wembley on May 25.
