Cameron Young is on the verge of missing the cut at the 2023 PGA Championship due to a two-stroke penalty received on the 16th hole (seventh for him) of the second round. This caused him to close his performance at +9, four strokes below the projected cut line.

The infraction occurred at the time of the fourth shot on the 16th hole. Cameron Young's ball had landed in an area of the green where the other players in the group, Tommy Fleetwood and Hideki Matsuyama, were also playing. Young picked up his ball to wait his turn.

At the time of his stroke, he put the ball in the wrong area and, according to the PGA Championship rules, he received a two-stroke penalty. Thus, his par became a double bogey, which practically took him out of the competition.

Young was not able to recover his pace after the situation. The world No. 15 thus becomes the first top golfer to officially say goodbye to this edition of the PGA Tour. He also saw his streak of 17 consecutive tournaments making the cut broken.

It was not a good competition for Young, despite the penalty he received. Even without it, he would have closed with a +7 that would have still left him below the projected cut line.

He closed the first day with +4, committing five bogeys and making only one birdie, a performance far below expectations.

The second day was worse because, not counting the penalty on the 16th hole, Cameron Young made four bogeys and a double bogey, against only three birdies.

He thus closes his participation in his second PGA Championship, a tournament in which last season he recorded an excellent performance, finishing T3.

Cameron Young is a professional since 2019 and joined the PGA Tour just last season, however, he has shown signs of being one of the players to always take into account.

Although he has yet to report victories, he has been runner-up in six tournaments, with two third-place finishes and 10 Top 10s. He has missed the cut in only 10 of the 40 tournaments in which he has participated.

In major tournaments, his record is also short. Not counting the current PGA Championship, he has been present in six golf majors, with a runner-up and a T3 last season, and a Top 10 at the 2023 Augusta Masters.

The best result of his career is having been runner-up in The Open Championship in 2022, where he was two strokes behind the champion, Cameron Smith. In that competition, Smith made 25 birdies, more than any other player in the tournament.
