Minecraft Lore: What is the story behind allay?

Allays are some of the cutest mobs in Minecraft. These blue flying buddies survey the area around the player and find interesting items to bring to them. Apart from being cute, allays are also mysterious. They are not found naturally in any biome, they do not eat anything, and the most interesting part is that they cannot be bred using any food item. Thus, it is safe to say that allays differ from other mobs in the game.

What is the story behind allays? How did they come into existence, and why do they help players acquire different items? Let’s look at the lore behind the allay and the potential origin of this friendly mob.

Allays were added to Minecraft in 2022 with the Wild Update as the mob won the vote. But apart from their behavior and spawn location, the developer did not share any other information about them.

However, players got to see the allays in Minecraft Legends, a Minecraft spinoff game that focuses on the First Age, a time during the great war between the people of the Overworld and Piglins from the Nether.

They are known to help players in gathering items. It is possible that the three Gods in Minecraft, Action, Foresight, and Knowledge, created allays to help players defeat the piglins.

While this explains the origin, something that remains a mystery is why players are unable to find allays roaming freely around different biomes. allays are always found locked up in Pillager outposts and Woodland Mansions, structures built by Illagers.

Here’s the possible reason for it: the Illagers captured all the allays during the first age. Since allays cannot reproduce naturally, we do not see naturally spawning allays in any biome. But why did the Illagers capture allays?

The Evoker could have used the allays to transmute them into Vexes. Like allays, Vexes are small, flying creatures capable of carrying items and attacking players.

The Evokers use allays to turn them into hostile mobs that can not only wield items but also use them to attack players. This also explains the fact that the Illagers keep the allays locked up inside and do not kill them outright.

Another interesting thing to notice is the name of these mobs. The word “allay” means to relieve or put to rest, while the word “Vex” means to annoy, irritate, or provoke. It strengthens the theory that Vexes are the allays turned opposite in nature: evil and demonic instead of helpful and angelic.
