European F1 Grand Prix - Practice

VALENCIA, SPAIN – JUNE 22: Pedro de la Rosa of Spain and Hispania Racing Team crashes out during practice for the European Grand Prix at the Valencia Street Circuit on June 22, 2012 in Valencia, Spain.

Pedro de la Rosa has urged Formula 1 to reconsider its safety procedures during test sessions. His statement follows the accident of Maria de Villota after which she lost her right eye. The accident occurred during a Marussia test session at the Duxford Airfield and it is suspected it was due to the unsuitability of the location for testing. However, the investigation is still ongoing.

De la Rosa, Chairman of the Grand Prix Drivers’ Association, said: “We will put the facts on the table to see if there is anything we need to change to improve. When an accident happens, it means that something did not work properly.”

“We need to make sure, between the FIA, the teams and the GPDA, that we make changes for the future because it is not good enough. The first thing we need to do is understand what happened, what safety measures were taken and how the airfield was prepared for Formula 1 testing.”
