Two more motorsports deaths in California

Daniel Rivas Fernandez, who died yesterday at the age of 27

Spanish riders Bernat Martinez and Daniel Rivas Fernandez both perished in Monterey, California, in an accident involving multiple bikes at the MotoAmerica Superbike/Superstock 1000 race at Laguna Seca.

The chain reaction triggered a series of casualties, two of them – Martinez and Fernandez – fatalities. Both Spaniards were immediately taken to medical facilities. 35-year-old Martinez was taken to the local community hospital in Monterey by ambulance, and succumbed to his injuries there.

His compatriot, 27-year-old Fernandez, appeared to have suffered more severe injuries, and was thus immediately airlifted to a more specialised medical centre in nearby Salinas, California but was unable to be saved.

Spokespersons and executives from the Mazda Raceway, where the incident occurred, released statements condoling the deaths:

"We are deeply saddened to learn the news of the passing of Bernat Martinez and Daniel Rivas," said Gill Campbell, CEO and general manager of Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca. "Our prayers and hearts go out to their families and teams."
