The John Deere Classic began more than 50 years ago on the PGA Tour, an annual golf event that takes place in July, a week before the Open Championship, at the TPC Deere Run in Illinois, United States.

Steve Sticker is the only golfer with three straight wins at the event, from 2009 to 2011, while D. A. Weibring is another three-time winner of the event. Another notable highlight is that Jordan Spieth, a three-time major winner, became the youngest PGA Tour winner at the 2013 John Deere Classic.

In the 2018 season, Michael Kim set a record with the lowest score ever at the event of 257, under 27, where he won over Russell Henley by two strokes.

In the 2023 season, Sepp Straka won the John Deere Classic by a score of 263, under 21, defeating Alex Smalley and Brendon Todd by two shots, winning $1.3 million in the winner's share of the $7.4 million purse.

John Deere Classic 2024 History

Originally held in 1971 under the name Quad Cities Open, the competition was a "satellite event" on the PGA Tour, which was recognized in 1972. The event was hosted by Ed McMahon, a well-known American TV personality for "The Tonight Show," from 1975 until 1979. Miller Brewing Company (1982–1985), Hardee's (1986–1994), and John Deere (since 1999) have all served as title sponsors.

The tournament was held at Davenport, Iowa's Crow Valley Country Club, from its founding in 1971 until 1974. It was based at the Oakwood Country Club in Coal Valley, Illinois, from 1975 to 1999. The event has taken place at the TPC at Deere Run in Silvis since 2000.

If a player does not already qualify for the Open, the John Deere Classic is their last opportunity, along with the Genesis Scottish Open, to do so by placing in the top five. This opportunity has existed since the inception of the Open Qualifying Series.

Since 2008, the John Deere Classic has sponsored a charter jet that departs the Quad Cities on Sunday night and lands in Britain the next day in an effort to help draw players who will participate in the Open Championship the week afterwards.
