Nebraska Betting Laws & Guide

Nebraska is in a waiting period at the moment, as they’ve legalized sports betting, but haven’t gotten it up and running yet. As they review the bill, making changes that they deem necessary, residents wait patiently for their chance to place bets. Another disappointing aspect of Nebraska’s sports betting law is that there is no plan for online betting, meaning bettors will have to visit a casino to make a bet.

Is Sports Betting Legal in Nebraska?

Yes, sports betting is legal in Nebraska, although nobody can place a legal wager yet. Voters approved a measure in November 2020 seeking expansion for gaming options in the state’s casinos. In May 2021, the state legislature approved a bill that would bring sports betting to Nebraska, however it is only in a retail capacity. They haven’t worked out the details and started accepting sports bets, but its arrival is imminent. If you’re looking to bet online, unfortunately, you’re out of luck in Nebraska.

Is DraftKings Sports Betting Legal in Nebraska?

No, while DraftKings is legal in Nebraska, they have no retail sportsbooks in the state. That, paired with online betting remaining unavailable, means that there is no way to use the DraftKings Sportsbook while in Nebraska. When retail betting launches DraftKings may partner with a casino and accept bets, but that will be the only way to use DraftKings for the foreseeable future. Their daily fantasy sports app accepts entries from Nebraska, so that’s a way to use DraftKings in the meantime.

Why is Sports Betting Illegal in Nebraska?

Placing a sports bet in Nebraska is currently illegal because they haven’t set everything up yet to officially accept wagers. Once they do, sports betting won’t be illegal at all in Nebraska. As for online betting, their current bill only added retail betting in the state, so there’s no telling when they would discuss adding online betting. Mobile betting brings in much more money than retail, so it would likely be soon. Then again, in over a year, they still haven’t launched retail betting even though it’s explicitly legal.

When Will Nebraska Sports Betting Start?

Although sports betting is legal and actively being implemented, at its current rate, before the 2023 football season seems like the earliest date for retail bets to be accepted in Nebraska. It could potentially arrive before 2022 ends or early in 2023, but it doesn’t seem likely. Until then, if you’re looking to legally wager through an online sportsbook, Colorado, Iowa, Kansas, and Wyoming are all border states that are fully mobile for sports betting. South Dakota also allows sports betting at select casinos if you’re along that border.
