Online sports betting is legal in the state, but it is considered too expensive to launch. Delaware also legalized and regulated daily fantasy sports. In addition, betting on horse racing is legal in Delaware.

Florida

Sports betting in Florida is currently on hold until further notice. This is because the only thrive that has a monopoly on sports betting ended up on the wrong side of the law. Louisiana has currently legalized sports betting of all forms. In 2020, a referendum was passed by the state voters, and it legalized sports betting in the state. Sports betting in Minnesota was legalized by lawmakers in February 2022. Since then, no formal bill has been published. However, if the bill is passed, online and in-person sports betting would be legalized at the racetracks and tribal casinos across the state. These operators would then be taxed by the state on transactions carried out outside the tribal lands.

There are also multiple betting sites where bettors can place bets legally. Additionally, there are numerous casinos at venues spread throughout Pennsylvania.

Puerto Rico

Sports betting was officially legalized in Puerto Rico in 2019. However, legal online betting in the state should be available in the near future. When online sports betting is finally legalized, bettors will need to register in person to bet with online sportsbooks. Currently, no online sportsbooks have been launched in Puerto Rico, but it should be happening in the next few months. Bettors can legally bet on college sports in Puerto Rico.

Rhode Island

Sports betting in Rhode Island was legalized in 2018, and the existing provisions were expanded by lawmakers in 2019. This was aimed at including mobile and online betting. You must be within the nation’s territories to place a bet, but you don’t have to be a resident of Rhode Island.

There is no conclusive timeline as to when sports betting will be legalized in South Carolina.

South Dakota

In August 2021, a set of betting regulations were approved by the South Dakota legislature. The first legal sports bets in South Dakota were then placed the following month. Sports betting, both online and in-person, is currently allowed at approved casinos. Mobile sports betting in the state is not legal yet, but daily fantasy is legal in the state. First-time users of the daily fantasy app receive deposit bonuses.

Tennessee

Mobile and online sports betting are currently legal in Tennessee. The state of Tennessee first introduced an online-only model, with legal sportsbook apps and no retail betting. However, online sportsbooks are more popular as they come with options such as promotions and bonuses.

Washington

Sports betting is legitimate in Washington, but the market just started growing. Even though sports betting was legalized in 2020, the first casino became operational in 2021. Online Sports Betting Status of Every State in 2022: Complete US Map

Arizona

Arizona passed its sports betting bill in 2021, allowing for online wagering and some of the state’s first sportsbooks. The original online sportsbooks in the country were launched in September, on the first day of the 2021 NFL season. There are approximately 18 operators operating in Arizona currently.

Arkansas

In February 2022, the Joint Budget Commission in Arkansas implemented rules to allow sports betting online. This was an expansion from in-person activity at three casinos, which had been limited in 2019. The first online sportsbook went live in March. Arkansas’s law allows for up to eight online sportsbooks. However, most brands are hesitant to join because they have to partner with the three casinos in the state, meaning they have to split 51% of their earnings with them.

Colorado

Colorado legalized online sports betting retail wagering in May 2020. Since then, Colorado has thrived as one of the most robust markets in the country. The state has 26 betting apps. Colorado was the first state to record a monthly earning of $200 million in the betting handle. Online sportsbooks have to partner with at least one of the 33 casinos in the state to operate legally. This has left more opportunities open for more apps to launch. The betting set-ups in Colorado are extremely friendly.

Connecticut

Connecticut governor authorized online sports betting and the state lottery to run in May 2021. These providers quickly teamed up with three sportsbooks, which all went online by October. This was a few days after Connecticut started allowing in-person bets. At least each casino has an in-person sportsbook, while the state lottery operates retail locations. The law allows for 15 retail locations.

Delaware

Even though Delaware was the first state outside Nevada to accept legal single-game sports in 2018, the state does not support online sports betting. There are only three retail sportsbooks in the state.

Florida

Hard Rock was the first and the only one to take legal online sports bets in Florida for only two months. Online sports betting in the state was halted after a federal judge banned an agreement that gave monopoly jurisdiction of the market to one tribe. Currently, an appeal of this ruling is pending, but there is no hope that it will be resolved soon. Florida might not legalize sports betting in the next 3-4 years.

Illinois

In-person betting in Illinois was launched in March 2020, while online sports betting was launched in June of the same year. After this launch, more than five online sportsbooks became operational.

Indiana

Online sports betting in Indiana went live in October 2019, just a month after in-person bets were made legal. The law in Indiana allows for more than 40 online sportsbooks. However, only 13 are operational in the state as we speak. Four more online sportsbooks are expected to be operational in the state, but so far, the market is dominated by major players.

Iowa

Iowa started accepting bets legally in 2019. The state hosts more than 20 online sportsbooks, and the state offers some of the cheapest licensing fees. In-person registration in Iowa expired for good in 2021, increasing the state’s monthly handle.

Louisiana

In November 2020, legal sports betting was approved in Louisiana. In-person betting launched in 2021, and six online sportsbooks went live in January of 2022. The state legally allows for seven online sportsbooks. More online sportsbooks are expected to be set in motion in the future because the law allows for up to 41 different mobile apps. Louisiana is the only state in the Southeastern that has legalized online betting.

Maryland

Online sports betting in Maryland is still pending. Maryland’s law accepts 60 online sportsbooks, but the delay in legalizing online sports betting has taken 19 months. There has been little to no hope that the state will legalize online betting any time soon.

Michigan

Online sportsbooks in Michigan launched in early 2021, and the state now has a total of 15 sportsbooks. This is the highest number allowed by the law in the state. Michigan is one of the few states where iGaming is legal. Michigan has operator-friendly regulations, which should keep it at the top of sports betting for years to come.

Mississippi

The state of Mississippi has mobile wagering, but bettors can only place bets while inside a casino. This means that online sports betting is completely illegal in the state.

Montana

Montana offers mobile wagering, but players can only place bets in a retail location. Online sports betting in the state is illegal.

Nevada

Nevada hasn’t yet mastered online wagering. The state requires players to go to a physical casino to register in person before they can place bets online. This was a major issue for the state during the early days of the COVID-19 pandemic because bettors could not go to casinos.

New Hampshire

New Hampshire made online sports betting legal in December 2019. There is only one mobile operator in the state known as DraftKings. Mobile apps are expected to launch in the state soon.

New Jersey

New Jersey is the state that brought the sports gambling case to the US Supreme Court. The state legalized online sports betting immediately after the Supreme Court’s ruling. The state hosts 21 online sportsbooks, and it has room for 20 more. New Jersey is the state with the highest monthly handle.

New Mexico

Online sports betting is not legal in New Mexico, and there is no hope of legalization happening any time soon.

New York

Online sports betting was made lawful in New York in January 2022. Sports bettors in the state can rejoice and place bets at home without having to go to the casinos in the state.

North Carolina

North Carolina legalized in-person betting in 2019, but it hasn’t legalized online sports betting yet. The state tried legalization in 2022 but failed, and it will continue to fight for legalization in 2023. The good news is that the state’s governor is a staunch supporter of legalizing online sports betting, and his term ends in 2025.

North Dakota

Betting on sports online is illegal in North Dakota, and there is no current political movement striving to legalize sports gambling in the state.

Oregon

The federal sports betting ban had a limited exemption that allowed Oregon officials to allow the state lottery to start taking bets without any separate legislature. As a result, the state lottery app was launched in 2019, but with only one legal mobile wagering option. The state has not been able to match competitive markets since.

Pennsylvania

Pennsylvania allowed a digital launch in 2019, which meant online sports betting in the state was legal. Bettors in the state have access to multiple betting options after the legalization.

Rhode Island

Online sports betting in Rhode Island is legal, but the state only accepts one legal online sportsbook. The sportsbook is known as William Hill.

South Dakota

Online sports betting is illegal in South Dakota. The state constitution only allows wagering within tribal lands and Deadwood. However, lawmakers believe that mobile wagering can be allowed if the servers are only placed in Deadwood. Legislation to achieve this failed in 2021 and 2022, but it could open a digital market in the coming years.

Tennessee

Tennessee is the only state with no casinos, meaning it only allows online sports betting. There are multiple restrictions in Tennessee’s digital sports betting market, which could hurt the market’s potential.

Virginia

The initial online sports bet was placed in Virginia in January 2021. The state currently has over a dozen operators. Lawmakers included a clause in the 2023 budget to remove promo tax deductions for operators after being in the market for a year.

Washington

Online sports betting in Washington, DC, is not legal, and bettors are required to access mobile sports betting if they place bets within a casino facility. This is a huge setback to the state’s revenue potential. In addition, mobile betting in the state doesn’t seem like an option in the near future.

Washington, DC

Washington, DC, offers limited mobile betting options. The state has one mobile app known as GamBtDC, and it is run by the lottery. The app is run partly because it has no competition legally, and it has offered very bad lines. In addition, the app is geofenced out of any federal properties. Caesars allows mobile wagering, but bettors must be within the stadium.

West Virginia

Mobile sports betting has been legal in West Virginia since August 2019. The state is home to multiple mobile operators, meaning bettors have multiple legal options to place a bet from anywhere within the state. Some of the mobile dealers in the state include DraftKings and FanDuel.

Wisconsin

Online sports betting or wagering is not legal in Wisconsin as the state only allows in-person sportsbooks.

Wyoming

Statewide mobile wagering is legal in Wyoming, and it is the second state to approve betting without the presence of any retail sportsbooks. The first two online sportsbooks went live in September 2021.

Kansas

Online sports betting has been approved in Kansas, but bettors are waiting for further action by regulators. More online sportsbooks could launch in the state soon. According to Kansas law, native tribes can update their gaming compacts and partner with commercial operators to provide online betting.

Maine

Online sports betting in Maine has been approved, but more action must be taken by regulators. A bill signed by the state’s governor allows the four native tribes in the state to team up with commercial operators to provide online sports betting. The law requires up to four mobile sportsbooks.

Massachusetts

Sports betting legalization in Massachusetts has been approved but waiting for its launch. The final bill allows casinos to partner with two online operators each. In addition, racetracks are allowed to have one online partner.

Ohio

Ohio legislators passed online sports betting bill in late 2021and the state’s governor approved it. Even though residents thought betting would start in time for the NFL 2022 season, regulators announced that all forms of betting would go live on January 1, 2023.

Nebraska

Sports betting was approved by voters, but regulators must undertake further action.

California

State tribes are openly campaigning against the legalization of online sports betting by allowing commercial operators to partner with tribes. The commercial proposal collected enough signatures to qualify, but collections must be verified by state officials.

Alabama

Alabama is among the states that don’t have a lottery. There was a bill that looked promising in 2022, but lawmakers ended their session without voting on it. The bill aimed at allowing a state-run lottery and mobile wagering. Since there is no lottery to run online betting in the state, a robust market would be difficult to operate. Eventually, Alabama might opt to run an exclusive online market. However, passing such a bill remains impossible in a state with strong gaming repulsions.

Alaska

Alaska is nowhere in online sports gambling.

Georgia

Sports betting could be legalized in 2023, with no possible action for online sports betting.

Hawaii

Hawaii legislature may opt to legalize sports betting in the future, but no mention of online sports betting.

Idaho

There is no hope for online sports betting in Idaho as current state laws are against gambling, except for horse racing. Fantasy sports in the state are illegal as well.

Kentucky

Kentucky came close to legalizing sports betting in 2022, but the effort to give control to racetracks over online markets failed at the last minute. The chance to pass a legalization bill is possible in 2024.

Minnesota

In 2022, Minnesota came really close to legalizing sports betting. A bill that was proposed hoped to give control over online betting to the native tribes in the state. However, the bill fell apart after Senators decided to amend it to include racetracks and professional sports teams. The tribes pulled their support after this amendment because they wanted to be given a monopoly on sports betting.

Missouri

In 2022, Missouri nearly passed a sports betting bill that would have authorized the launch of up to 39 sportsbooks. However, the bill fell apart and never recovered. There is possible action to legalize sports betting in the state in 2023.

Oklahoma

There is no hope for the legalization of online sports betting in Oklahoma. This is because even sports betting is not legal, and only Native American entities can agree on sports betting. Since they are always in conflict with the government, legalization might take forever.

South Carolina

Lawmakers in South Carolina passed a bill in 2022 that would have allowed the launch of up to 12 online sportsbooks. However, the bill did not gain much support. There is no hope of legalization in the future because Gov. Henry McMaster is against sports betting.

Texas

There is no hope for the legalization of online sports betting in Texas, but sports betting could be legalized next year.

Utah

Online sports betting is never coming to Utah, as it’s the only state in the US with no major legal gaming form.

When did the US Supreme Court Legalize Betting?

The federal ban on state legalization of sports betting was struck down by the United States Supreme Court on May 14, 2018. This decision gave permission to states that are interested in allowing betting on sporting events. This is a process that a lot of states have started. New Jersey took the case to court to ban PASPA (Professional and Amateur Sports Protection Act). PASPA banned states from operating, licensing, authorizing, promoting, and sponsoring betting schemes. This ban also applied to individuals who were prohibited from engaging in the same kinds of activities. The recent Supreme Court decision opens the opportunity to legalize sports betting in the US.

Is Online Betting on US Sports Legal in Canada?

Yes. Legal online sports betting is legal in Canada, with every province regulating sports betting inside its territories. Ontario is one of the states that expanded its sports betting footprint with an open market. In August 2021, Canadian lawmakers amended the state’s Criminal Code to allow for single-game sports betting. Single-game means the kinds of sports betting allowed in Las Vegas and other US states. This means that single-event betting is legal in Canada.
